What your fee actually buys you
One fee covers all four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — plus your first Test Report Form. Score lower than you hoped and a retake means paying the full fee again, unless a One Skill Retake option is offered here. And a no-show without cancelling ahead of time forfeits the entire fee, so always reschedule in advance if you can't make your test date.
Why the fee is only half the cost
₹19,000 is a flat fee. IDP charges the same amount whether you are taking Academic or General Training, on computer or on paper, in Mumbai or in a smaller centre. This flatness seems simple. It is not. IELTS does not give a discount if you take the test again. If your band score is not enough for a university or immigration application, you have to pay the full ₹19,000 again the next time you book. There is one small exception, which is the IELTS One Skill Retake, at ₹12,650, but this only helps if one of the four skills is the problem. Most people who do not get the score they need fail in more than one area at once.
The reasons people end up paying twice are not usually about vocabulary. They are about the format: running out of time in Writing Task 2 because the 40 minutes were never rehearsed, or thinking the Listening recording is slow because it only plays once, or getting nervous in Speaking Part 2 because two minutes of talking feels very different in a real test room than it does when you read questions at home.
