IELTS fee in Malaysia: from RM 930

British Council and IDP Education both administer IELTS in Malaysia and price independently. British Council's standard fee, RM 930, actually undercuts IDP's RM 960, a reversal of the pattern seen in most other countries.

What your fee actually buys you

One fee covers all four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — plus your first Test Report Form. Score lower than you hoped and a retake means paying the full fee again, unless a One Skill Retake option is offered here. And a no-show without cancelling ahead of time forfeits the entire fee, so always reschedule in advance if you can't make your test date.

Why the fee is only half the cost

Malaysia runs the reverse of the usual pattern: British Council's RM 930 undercuts IDP's RM 960 for the standard test, one of the few markets where the newer provider isn't the cheaper one. That gap closes fast if you need a second attempt, since neither side discounts a repeat sitting, and rechecking your script through an Enquiry on Results adds another RM 450 on top.

Malaysia also keeps Speaking as a face-to-face round even though Listening, Reading, and Writing all run on computer, a hybrid setup that trips up anyone expecting the whole test to feel the same. Typing 250 words for Task 2 against a 40-minute timer is its own adjustment too, especially if the last practice essay you wrote was by hand.

SmoothMock's free mock mirrors that same split-format structure and timing used across Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Johor Bahru, marked against the band criteria an examiner would apply. Running through it once before paying RM 930 or RM 960 means the format isn't new anymore on the day that matters.

Its Speaking section still puts you in front of an AI examiner that asks genuine follow-up questions rather than reading down a list. Writing feedback is broken out by error type, so a weak Lexical Resource score comes with a reason attached instead of just a number. Listening runs once through, no repeats, matching what every Malaysian test centre actually does.

Refund & reschedule policy

Refunds

With IDP: cancel or transfer 5+ weeks before your test date for a refund minus RM 233 (RM 259 for UKVI, RM 220 for Life Skills); within 5 weeks the full fee is forfeited. An Enquiry on Results, or remark, costs RM 450 regardless of test type. British Council follows the standard global policy: a refund minus a 25% admin fee if you cancel 5+ weeks out, non-refundable within 5 weeks except with a medical certificate submitted within 2 days of the test date.

Rescheduling

IDP treats transfers the same as cancellations, so the RM 220-259 admin charge applies if you move your date 5+ weeks out, and the full fee is forfeited if you move it later than that. British Council may charge a penalty depending on how much notice you give, under its standard reschedule terms.

How this compares regionally

Malaysia is one of the few countries where British Council actually undercuts IDP on the standard test, RM 930 versus RM 960, the reverse of what's typical in the region. In USD terms (about $228-235), Malaysia's fee lands well below Thailand's (about $271).

Questions, answered

Malaysia-specific questions, plus what every IELTS test-taker should know about the fee.

Is British Council or IDP cheaper for IELTS in Malaysia?+

British Council's standard fee (RM 930) is slightly lower than IDP's (RM 960), an unusual reversal of the pattern in most other countries. Compare both before booking, since a 6% Sales and Services Tax applies to non-Malaysian test takers at British Council.

Is IELTS Life Skills cheaper than the standard test in Malaysia?+

Yes, RM 880 for IELTS Life Skills at either provider, versus RM 930-960 for standard Academic or General Training.

How much does IELTS UKVI cost in Malaysia?+

RM 1,065 via IDP, or roughly RM 1,035-1,065 via British Council depending on test centre.

How much does it cost to have my IELTS score rechecked in Malaysia?+

RM 450 for an Enquiry on Results through IDP, regardless of test type.

How can I pay the IELTS fee in Malaysia?+

Credit or debit card via PayPal for IDP's online registration, or cash, cheque, or card in person at IDP offices. British Council accepts card payment through its online registration system.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my IELTS test in Malaysia?+

With IDP, yes, minus RM 233-259 depending on test type, if you cancel or transfer 5 or more weeks before your test date. Within 5 weeks the fee is forfeited entirely.

What's included in the IELTS fee?+

The fee covers all four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — plus one Test Report Form (TRF) sent to you and, if requested at registration, to a limited number of institutions or visa bodies free of charge. Extra copies of your TRF beyond the included number usually cost extra.

How long is an IELTS result valid for?+

Two years from the test date, for both Academic and General Training. Most universities and immigration authorities won't accept a TRF older than that, so time your test around your application or visa deadline.

Do I need to pay the full fee again if I fail or I'm unhappy with my score?+

Yes, for a full retake — IELTS doesn't have a discounted retake fee. Some countries offer a cheaper IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR), letting you re-sit just one section instead of all four, where available.

What documents do I need to book and pay for IELTS?+

A valid passport (the same one you'll bring on test day) is required at registration — your name and passport number must match exactly, since a mismatch can block you from sitting the test or collecting results.

Is the IELTS fee refundable if I don't turn up on test day?+

No — a no-show without prior cancellation forfeits the full fee under both British Council and IDP's global policy. Always cancel or transfer in advance if you can't make it, rather than skipping the test.
